AS Roma

Could this year be AS Roma's year? Ever since 2001 its fans have waited to win the national title and they are holding their fingers crossed as they see the great campaign that AS Roma is having so far at the beginning of the 2014-2015 season. AS Roma was founded in 1927 in the city of Rome by Italo Foschi, it was a merge of 3 football clubs of the time. Roma has competed in the top Italian division, Serie A, for more than sixty years following its only relegation to Serie B in 1951. Roma has won the Serie A title three times in its history, (1942, 1983, 2001). The club has also won nine Coppa  Italia titles and was the runner up of the European Cup in 1984. Its glorious decade was in the 1980s in which it won the Serie A (1983) and 4 Italian cups (1980, 1981, 1984,1986)  with excellent players like: Bruno Conti, Carlo Anzelotti, Roberto Pruzzo, Giuseppe Giannini and Brazilian Roberto Falcao.

Another wonderful decade was between 2000-2010 in which AS Roma won the national championship (2001), 2 Italian cups (2007,2008), 2 Italian Super Cups (2002, 2008), was the runner up of the Serie A 6 times and got to the final of Coppa Italia 4 times. It also got twice to the quarter finals of the Champions League. Notable players of these squads are Christian Pannucci, Daniele De Rossi, Simone Perrotta, Francesco Totti, Argentinean Gabriel Batistuta and Brazilians Aldair and Cafu.

Roma’s home stadium is the Stadio Olimpico, which seats over 70,000 spectators and is 2nd in size only to San Siro. The stadium is shared with its Rome rivals, Lazio. The Derby della Capitale is the derby match between Roma and Lazio. It is said to be one of the biggest and most heated in world football.

The club is the fifth most supported team in Italy and participates regularly in either the Champions League or the Europa League.

Francesco Totti stands out as the biggest icon of AS Roma in all times. He grew up in the club and made his first appearance for the first team in 1993 when he was only 16 years old. Totti became the club’s captain in 1998. He holds the record for most goals and appearances with 250 goals in 619 games.

Notable former managers of the club include Claudio Ranieri, Fabio Capello and Sven-Goran Eriksson. Aside from Totti, some of Roma’s key players are Edin Dzeko, Radja Nainggolan, Mohamed Salah, Stephan El Shaarawy, Daniele De Rossi. Manager, Luciano Spalletti, who returned to the club in 2016 after a brief spat in Russia, is hoping to get the best out of these players to help get the club back into the Champions League knock out stages and maybe even win the Serie A.
