The Chicago Bulls are an American professional basketball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Bulls are a member of the Central Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Founded on January 16, 1966 the Bulls have a home base at the United Center, an arena shared with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Bulls greatest period of success was during the 1990s. They are known for having one of the NBA's greatest dynasties, winning six NBA championships between 1991 and 1998 with two three-peats, this being NBA shorthand for winning championships in three successive years. All six championship teams were led by Hall of Famers Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Coach Phil Jackson. The Bulls are the only NBA franchise to win multiple championships and never lose an NBA Finals in their history.
The accomplishments of the Chicago Bulls at their peak are the stuff of legends. During the 1995-96 NBS the Bulls won a NBA record-72 games and are the only team in NBA history to win 70 games or more in a single season. Consequently many people “in the know” consider the 1996 Bulls to be one of the greatest teams in NBA history. As of 2015, the Bulls are the third most valuable NBA franchise according to Forbes, with an estimated value of $2 billion, earning approximately $65 million in operating income from the 2014–15 NBA season. Michael Jordan and Derrick Rose have both won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award while playing for the Bulls, for a total of six MVP awards.
Let’s look at some of the star players who have brought such distinction to the club they represented. Michael Jordan is not only the biggest star of the Bulls, he is also generally thought to be the greatest of all time. He won six titles - three in a row, then minor league baseball (missing just about all of two years), came back and won three more titles. His fourth championship (first post retirement #1) set the record for most wins in a season. It is also notable that Jordan was the 3rd pick in the draft. Two teams passed on him.
When you think of Jordan, you automatically think of Scottie Pippen, considered as Jordan’s trusty sidekick but in his own right one of the game's greatest perimeter defenders. He was selected to 10 All-Defensive Teams: eight First Team selections and two Second Team selections. Scottie went on to help the Bulls win six titles.
An important figure in the Bulls’ early history was Jerry Sloan who played for them from 1966-1976 and won the nickname of "The Original Bull." Sloan amazingly led the Bulls to the playoffs in their first year of existence, something that wouldn't happen in today's NBA.
