Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based in Oakland, California who play in the Pacific Division in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team was established in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a founding member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), and it won the inaugural 1947 BAA Finals now considered the first NBA Championship. The team colors are Royal blue, California golden yellow and white.
In 1962, the franchise relocated to the Bay Area and was renamed as the San Francisco Warriors until 1971, when it changed its geographic name to Golden State, which is of course the nickname of the State of California. Since 1972, the team's home court has been Oracle Arena in Oakland. However the Warriors will relocate back to San Francisco following the April 2014 commencement of the purchase process for a 12-acre site in Mission Bay, San Francisco, to hold a new 18,000-seat arena which they hope to have ready for the 2018–19 NBA season. Once legal and planning objections are overcome, construction should begin in early 2016.
The Warriors have won four NBA championships in 1947, 1956, 1975, and most recently won the 2015 Finals by defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers. In addition they have won three Eastern Conference titles (1947, 1948, 1956) and four in the Western Conference (1964, 1967, 1975, 2015).
Looking at the roster of great Warriors players in their various home settings, pride of place in many people’s minds goes to Wilf Chamberlain (“Wilt the Stilt”)who played for the team from 1959-1965. In each of the five full seasons he spent with the Warriors (and his sixth season in which he was traded), Chamberlain won the NBA scoring title. He won the rebounding title in four of those seasons and led the league in shooting percentage in three of them.
Rich Barry was an All-Star in each of the eight seasons he played for the Warriors and an All-NBA player in six of them. He is one of the top 15 or 20 players in the history of the league, and No. 2 in the history of the Warriors.
Small forward Chris Mullin spent twelve years in Oakland and led the Warriors to five playoff appearances. He averaged 25.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.9 steals and 0.7 blocks on 52.3 percent FG shooting and 87.1 percent FT shooting.
Paul Arizin achieved 11.3 rebounds per game in the 1951-52 season for Arizin, which should be considered amongst the absolute greatest years in NBA history.
During his 10-year career, playing exclusively in Philadelphia, Arizin averaged 22.8 points and 8.6 rebounds, won a championship and made the All-Star Team every single season of his career.
The Team current star is Steph Curry who is considered to be one of the best shooters in NBA history and holds several NBA shooting records, among them the Single Season Record for 3-Pt Field Goals (286). He was the 2015 NBA MVP and was instrumental to the Warriors 2015 title.
