You will find the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are an American professional basketball team at Target Center Minneapolis. They compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), in the league's Western Conference Northwest Division.
The creation of the Timberwolves marked the return of NBA basketball to the Twin Cities for the first time since the Minneapolis Lakers departed for Los Angeles in 1960. The franchise conducted a "name the team" contest and eventually selected two finalists, "Timberwolves" and "Polars", in December 1986. The team then asked the 842 city councils in Minnesota to select the winner and "Timberwolves" prevailed by nearly 2-1.The team was officially named the "Minnesota Timberwolves" on January 23, 1987. Minnesota is home to the largest population of timberwolves (often referred to as “grey wolves”) in the continental United States – hence an appropriate name.
The early years, as is the case with so many expansion teams, were years of struggle and difficulty. However once Kevin Garnett was brought in the 1995 NBA draft, there was a transformation in their fortunes and for eight years on the trot , the team qualified for the playoffs. Admittedly they lost in the first round for seven years but then the Timberwolves won their first division title in 2004 and made it to the Western Conference Finals. That year Garnett won the title of the NBA Most Valuable Player. Garnett was traded in 2007, in the middle of a prolonged slump by the Wolves ever since they missed the playoffs in 2005; however in 2015 he returned to raise Minnesota hopes.
Let’s look at some of the other Timberwolves who have given pleasure to their many supporters in the past three decades. Kevin Love played for the Timberwolves from 2008 to 2014 and is the best all-around offensive player to ever wear the Timberwolves jersey. Love showed that he could score from the paint or from beyond the arc, and he was also an impressive passer.
Al Jefferson was part of the trade that sent Kevin Garnett to the Bolton Celtics. Al was a solid replacement. In two out of his three seasons with the Timberwolves, he averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game.
Sam Cassell only spent two seasons in Minnesota, but he was there at the pinnacle of Timberwolves history. He was elected to his only All-Star appearance in 2004 while playing alongside both Kevin Garnett and Latrell Sprewell. He started 81 games that season and set a career high in points per game.
Jerome "Pooh" Richardson had the distinction of beinh the first-ever draft pick for the Timberwolves. He only played in Minnesota for three seasons, but he was very productive. Not only did he almost average a double-double, but he also played in every single game over that three-year span.
