RCD Espanyol is a Spanish football club from Barcelona who currently plays in the top-tier division La Liga. The club was founded in 1900, originally as Sociedad Espanola, by Angel Rodriguez Ruiz, an engineering student from Universidad de Barcelona. Espanyol was one of the founding La Liga clubs in 1928. The club is known for being the first club in Spain to be formed exclusively by Spanish football fans. Espanyol’s home colors are blue and white, and their away ones are red and white. Their alternative uniform is entirely black.
Nicknamed the Budgerigars or the White and Blue, Espanyol play their home matches at the newly constructed Estadi Cornellà-El Prat, which seats 40,500 spectators . Previously they played in other venues including the Estadi Olimpic Luis Companys.
The White and Blues have a very rich football history. Their record includes 4 Copa del Rey, 11 Campionat de Catalunya and 6 Copa de Catalunya. At European level they played the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League in 7 occasions, reaching the final in 1988, where they lose against Bayer Leverkusen.
Espnyol’s biggest ever La Liga win was their 8-0 victory over Real Sociedad in 1942, while their biggest La Liga loss was their 9-0 loss to Athletic Balibao in 1929, losing 9-0.
The club’s all-time leading league goal scorer is Raul Tamudo who scored 129 goals for the club between 1996 and 2010, followed by Rafael Maranon with 111 goals. Tamudo also has the most Espanyol appearances with 389 matches.
The club’s city rivals are their neighbors FC Barcelona. Their games are called the Derbi Barcelones. They met for the first time in December 1900, where the match ended tied with no goals. Despite the fact that Barcelona clearly leads the statistics, Espanyol won 34 matches scoring 172 goals. Also the club got key results, like their victory in 2009 in the Camp Nou by 2-1 or the 2-2 tie famously known as “El Tamudazo”, who left Barsa without the Liga title.
Notable former Espanyol players include Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta, Luis Garcia, Ivan Helguera, Danny Osvaldo, Maxi Rodriguez and Shunsuke Nakamura.
Espanyol are currently managed by Quique Sanchez Flores. Until January, he coached the team in 20 matches (Liga plus Copa del Rey) winning 5 games, losing other 5 and tying the rest. Defender Javi Lopez is the current team’s captain.
