Derby della Madonnina (AC Milan v Internazionale)
The Derby della Madonnina, or the Milan Derby, is the derby match played between the two biggest sides in the Milan city of Italy, AC Milan and Internazionale (Inter Milan). Along with Juventus, the two sides are the biggest and most successful in Italian football. Both clubs have won the Serie A title 18 times and have won combined total of 87 major trophy wins. The derby was named after one of Milan’s most famous statues the Virgin Mary, named Madonnina.
There are many cases in European football where one club has been formed from a merger of two or more others. Founded in 1899 by a former British vice-consul Alfred Edwards Milan won the Medaglia del Re (King's Medal) on January 1900, and the team later won three national leagues, in 1901, 1906 and 1907.
In 1908, issues over the signing of foreign players led to a split and the foundation of F.C. Internazionale Milano. This started a now historical rivalry between the two cross-town clubs, a rivalry especially heated since Inter broke off from AC Milan. In the past there were alleged class and political divisions between the supporters of the two sides but these have almost completely dissipated.
The sides’ first meeting came in 1908 where AC Milan beat Inter 2-1. As of 2015 the clubs have faced each other around 300 times. Milan have 111 wins to Inter's 105. Both fixtures in 2014-15 ended in a draw. The fixtures’ all-time leading scorer is Andri Shevchenko who scored 14 times for Milan against Inter.
Both clubs share the San Siro stadium, which seats 80,000 spectators. The stadium is also known as the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza, named after Giuseppe Meazza. Meazza was a legendary Italian striker who played for both of the clubs (scoring 13 times in the derby). Meazza also went on to manage Inter Milan.
During the 1960s, Inter was the more successful club, winning the European cup twice in a row and the Intercontinental Cup twice in a row. However during the late 1980s and the 1990s Silvio Berlusconi's Milan was the more dominant team, with many victories both in Italy and in the European competitions.
The derby match has seen many exciting score lines, the biggest of which were AC Milan’s 6-3 and 8-1 wins in 1911 and 1918 respectively. Other notable results include AC Milan’s 6-0 win in 2001 and Inter Milan’s 4-2 win in 2012.
Despite the competitive rivalry between the fans, the clubs also have respect for one another. Meazza was just one of many to have played for both the sides. Other notable players include Edgar Davids, Patrick Vieira, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic and most recently, Mario Balotelli.
The player with the most Derby della Madonnina appearances is Milan defender Paolo Maldini, who played in the fixture 57 times.
